Lintbox is a site devoted to science, skepticism and critical thinking. Here, you will find news articles, essays and discussion pertaining to scientific (and non-scientific) issues and events in the world around us, as well as a skeptical perspective of flim-flam such as homeopathy, mysticism and cryptozoology.
The formation of the website was motivated by a deep devotion to scientific understanding and the importance of critical thinking when contemplating important issues including human health, education and the very nature of life, the universe, and everything.
Since the beginning of recorded history, humans have struggled to understand the world around them as well as their place on this planet. Before the modern scientific method, humans could only postulate; to them, the stars in the sky were not massively distant spheres of incandescent gas, but the souls of fallen warriors watching over the living, or light seeping through the holes of the wicker basket in which the world rested. Despite the limiting nature of our assertions, humans remained deeply curious about everything around them. How surprised would our ancestors have been to discover the true size and shape of our planet, or how small and insignificant it really is?
Centuries later, we have still only answered a minute fraction of the questions about how our universe works. Nevertheless, our curiosity pushes us relentlessly forward and now, with the scientific method, we have the tools necessary to pursue the truth in an organized and systematic way.
We now know our planet is not at the center of the universe, but occupies a very small space orbiting the star Sol, which itself occupies a very small space in the Milky Way galaxy, which then occupies a very small space in the known-universe. Although our place in the universe may now seem incredibly trivial, the sheer size of our universe has only intensified our fascination. The most important thing in satisfying our curiosity is not to merely postulate, but to experiment and to observe; not to presume, but to test.
That is why we consider science and critical thinking to be the most important faculties in determining the truth. Simply enough, at Lintbox we are devoted fans of science and reason, and we make no effort to hide it.
